Project Overview
Assistive Technology Proposal
The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) is requesting the following resources to better serve students with disabilities at John Jay College. •LiveScribe Echo – blue ink cartridge (pack of 5): More students are requesting to borrow LiveScribe 3 pens for its various functionalities such as note taking, voice recording, and text-to-speech features. We would like to get 5 LiveScribe Echo – blue ink cartridge 5-pack. This will allow us to accommodate the students who use the smartpen better as they no longer have to worry about the smartpen running out of ink in the middle of a lecture. It will also reduce the need to order more LiveScribe 3 smartpens as each smartpen would be reusable for future semesters. •Security Camera – The Office of Accessibility Services provides proctoring services in addition to accommodations, and as such, we have dedicated rooms in our office specifically for students to test in. While it is uncommon, our office has caught students cheating while testing in our office. We also had students experience seizures while testing in our lab. We are requesting a budget to install a security camera in the testing lab so that one of our full-time staff can keep an eye on the students to ensure academic integrity is maintained, and in the event that a student experiences a seizure, we can request medical emergency services promptly. •Reading pens – As our office is experiencing an increase in the number of students who require text-to-speech accommodation, we are trying to expand our inventory of assistive technology that can provide text-to-speech service. With the reading pens, we can now loan students a portable text-to-speech assistive technology hardware that they can use to read physical text both on campus and at home. This will greatly help students study for exams or complete their assignments for courses that require reading. •Lenova Tab K11 Gen 2 – As our office is seeing an increase in the number of students who are hard of hearing or require note-taking assistive technology, we would like to purchase 4 tablets so that we can lend them to students to assist them in class. Students who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can fully utilize one of our new assistive technology that allows ASL interpreters or CART services to attend class remotely and interpret or caption the lecture for them. As the tablet will have a built-in microphone and camera, the student will find it easier to receive interpretation services for lectures.
