Project Overview

Library Media Project

In recent years, the demand for streaming video has exceeded our budget, notably with the popular Swank and Kanopy services, and we have had to take funds from the library’s OTPS budget to pay video bills. After ten years without an increase ($37k awarded in 2016), we are now asking for $50k annually, to keep up with increased costs and demand from the faculty. Our faculty expect students to be able to watch assigned videos at any time and place and there is no sign of this demand diminishing. Streaming costs more than DVDs, and tends to be a continuing cost rather than a onetime payment. Most streaming video content providers use a subscription business model. We pay each year to maintain access to content. The fragmented nature of video distribution means that there is no single service that will fulfill all our content needs. We have trialed various collections and assessed their utility to our users, noting usage statistics in addition to anecdotal feedback and make acquisition decisions accordingly. Currently, we use Tech Fee funds to pay annual subscription costs to provide access to Films on Demand and feature films and documentaries on the Kanopy and Swank platforms which mostly provide films from Hollywood studios. At the request of the Psychology Department, we started subscription to a collection of videos from the American Psychological Association, PsycTherapy. We have used Tech Fee funds to purchase documentaries from Docuseek, Criminology and Criminal Justice videos and Research Methods videos from Sage. Occasionally we can use funds to obtain licenses from filmmakers/distributors directly, if the cost is not prohibitive and there’s no other distributor for the educational market. In Spring 2026, a faculty member requested a purchase of Legacy: Apartheid’s Shadow, a film that was long-listed for the 2025 Oscars for Best Documentary Feature. We were able to acquire a perpetual license at a discounted rate directly from the creator, and the film is now viewable by all our community.
