The university has decided to move all faculty, staff and student email to Microsoft 365 email hosted in the cloud. There are several reasons we must do this. First, our current on-premises email system will become end of life in 18 months. Second, Microsoft is no longer focusing on developing new services around on-campus email systems. This means John Jay students will not have access to the same features as their counterparts at other CUNY campuses. Finally, the cyber risk of running on-campus email systems is much greater than using a cloud based hosted solution.
The cutover date for the 14,000 students is the end of July 2025. During the month of July students will be required to configure MFA as well as their phones and laptops to use the new system. In order to ensure enough support capacity this proposal seeks funding to hire 10 student workers over the summer until the end of the Fall 2025 semester. This street team will ensure students have the support they need during the email transition.
