To continue strengthening and advancing our Digital Media and Journalism program, the requested equipment will provide a vital step up from introductory digital video production methods, bridging the gap between cell phone-based production and professional-level filmmaking. By incorporating industry-standard tools, students will gain hands-on experience that elevates both their technical skills and creative capabilities.
Currently, students are learning to create compelling content using their cell phones, but the addition of this professional equipment will empower them to produce work that meets industry standards. It will enhance the quality of their projects and provide essential training in advanced techniques, preparing them for careers in media production.
This investment will not only improve the caliber of student work but also align the program with real-world production environments. As a result, it will help to attract more students, increase the program's credibility, and establish a strong foundation for future growth and success. The presence of professional-grade gear also enhances the quality and credibility of student work for future employers.
The equipment will be used by students enrolled in ENG 261 and future advanced video production courses, with access managed by the instructor. It will also support student projects across related classes in the Digital Media and Journalism minor.
Students will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard video production tools, building skills that prepare them for careers in media, journalism, and digital storytelling. The enhanced equipment will improve the quality of student projects, support more advanced coursework, and help students build professional portfolios to show future employers. This investment strengthens the college’s commitment to equity, access, and real-world learning experiences.
The equipment will be securely stored inside of my locked office within the English Department. I will oversee its use, manage check-outs through a sign-out system (Asset Tiger), and provide students with training on proper handling and care.
I will oversee the day-to-day operation of the equipment, including managing check-outs, and ensuring students are trained in proper handling.
This proposal aligns with the college’s 2025 Strategic Vision by expanding equitable access to professional tools that prepare students for careers in journalism and media production—helping to drive social mobility and close opportunity gaps. By empowering students to tell impactful, justice-focused stories through high-quality video, the equipment supports the development of fierce advocates for justice.
