Project Overview

MSRC Tech Request for Tutoring & Workshops

The Math & Science Resource Center (MSRC) at John Jay College serves as a vital Academic Support and Resource Center for undergraduate students enrolled in Math, Science, and Computer Science courses. The MSRC offers a range of support services including individual and group tutoring, content-based workshops, study groups, exam review sessions, and access to a resource library. These services are available both in-person and virtually. Currently, the MSRC serves approximately 800 to 1,500 students each semester. On average, we facilitate between 1,200 to 1,800 tutoring sessions and host around 195 workshops per semester. While our center is well-equipped for in-person sessions, we face challenges in supporting our virtual and hybrid services due to limited access to technology—specifically, laptops for tutoring staff. At present, our tutors are required to use their personal computers to conduct online tutoring sessions and facilitate virtual workshops. This is not a sustainable or equitable long-term solution. To enhance our capacity to offer online and hybrid/hyflex academic support, we are requesting funding to acquire eight (8) laptops for use by our tutoring staff while on campus. These devices will greatly improve the delivery and quality of virtual services for our students. Additionally, the MSRC has expanded its outreach and communication efforts through social media. In order to produce, store, and share high-quality content that engages our student body, we are requesting two (2) iPads to be designated as social media devices for MSRC staff use. These iPads will support our student engagement initiatives and allow for efficient content creation and management. In summary, we are requesting funding for the following equipment: 8 laptops for tutoring staff to support virtual and hybrid academic services 2 iPads for social media outreach and student engagement These technological upgrades will enable the MSRC to better serve the academic needs of John Jay students and continue expanding access to high-quality academic support in both physical and digital environments.
