The library is requesting funding to purchase four external SSD hard drives to establish an archival and offsite backup solution for our library servers. Currently, all our servers are housed in the DoIT datacenter, and while we rely on their infrastructure, it is critical to have an additional layer of protection. These external SSDs will serve as a secure, offsite backup to ensure the preservation of our data in the event of a catastrophic failure or disaster at the DoIT datacenter.
The external SSDs will only be accessible by the Chief librarian and the IT Academic Applications Director.
The SSDs will be stored at offsite location separate from the DoIT datacenter. This ensures that we have a offsite copy our data.
The external SSDs will provide a secure offsite backup, protecting library data from catastrophic failures. They ensure faster data transfer, durability, and quick disaster recovery, minimizing downtime. This investment safeguards digital assets and supports uninterrupted access for students, faculty, and staff.
The external SSDs will be regularly updated with the latest backups by the library’s IT team. Routine checks will be performed to ensure the integrity and functionality of the drives.
The library’s IT Director will oversee the management of the external SSDs.
The external SSDs align with the John Jay 2025 Strategic Plan by supporting Goal 2: "Enhance institutional effectiveness and innovation." This initiative ensures the reliability and security of our digital infrastructure, fostering a resilient environment for research, learning, and service continuity.
