Since 2011, the library has provided self-service BookScanner Stations, which have become an essential resource for students. These scanners allow users to quickly and easily digitize pages from books or other printed materials, saving the scans as PDFs or image files that can be emailed, saved to the cloud, printed, or copied to a flash drive. Over the years, the BookScanners have been immensely popular, but the oldest units—now over a decade old—are beginning to fail. Additionally, the All-in-One (AIO) PCs attached to these scanners are running on outdated hardware, causing slowdowns and reliability issues. We are requesting funding to replace three old scanners and several of the older AIO PCs attached to 3 of our existing scanners, ensuring reliable and efficient service for our students.
All library users—students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars—will have access to the scanners, though students are the primary users.
The replacement scanners and PCs will be installed in high-traffic areas, including the Reserve Lab and the library’s upper level.
Replacing these scanners and PCs will provide students with faster, more reliable service, reducing wait times and improving the overall user experience. Students will continue to save money by avoiding costly photocopies, and the library will further reduce paper waste. Upgrading the hardware will also ensure compatibility with current software and reduce technical issues.
The new scanners and AIO PCs will be covered under a maintenance agreement with the vendor, and the cost will be managed through our existing maintenance allocation.
The library’s technical support staff will oversee maintenance and provide assistance as needed, ensuring the scanners and PCs remain operational and
This initiative supports Goal 1: Student Success by providing students with reliable tools to access and digitize course materials efficiently. It aligns with Goal 2: Academic Excellence and Innovation by enhancing infrastructure for research and scholarship, enabling faculty and students to utilize critical print resources.
