We’re requesting funding to purchase SSL certificates for the library’s web services, including our main website, digital collections platform, and proxy server. Without these certificates, these sites won’t have encryption, leaving sensitive user data—like login information and personal details—exposed to potential security risks. This funding is essential to protect students, faculty, and staff who rely on these services on a daily basis.
Everyone who uses the library—students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars.
The SSL certificates will be installed and managed on the library’s web servers, ensuring secure access to all online services.
SSL certificates are essential for encrypting data transmitted through the library’s web services, protecting sensitive information such as login credentials, personal data, and research materials from potential cyber threats.
The SSL certificates will be maintained by the IT Academic Applications Director, who will ensure their proper installation, renewal, and ongoing functionality.
The IT Academic Applications Director will oversee the implementation and management of the SSL certificates.
This proposal aligns with John Jay College’s 2025 Strategic Plan by supporting secure, equitable, and reliable access to academic resources. SSL certificates ensure the library’s digital infrastructure is safe and resilient, directly contributing to Goal 2 (strengthening academic excellence) and Goal 5 (building a sustainable institution).
