Project Overview

Lab Assistant

The Modern Language Center (MLC) conducts all the Language Placement Exams as per the CUNY General Education requirements for foreign language as it pertains to World Cultures and Communications; and in conjunction with the Languages & Literatures department for the Spanish major, minor, and certificate program for interpretation and translation. The purpose of the exam is for accurate language course level placement with regard to registration as well as for those seeking exemption from the foreign language requirement. The exams are conducted online using the computers in our lab located in room 7.64 NB. MLC staff assist in overseeing exam operations and proctoring support, which involves online scheduling, digital exam registration & profile creation, and technology troubleshooting for when issues arise. In the previous fiscal year 22/23, the MLC recorded a total of 508 placement exams conducted, serving 499 unique students, a 42% and 43% increase respectively compared FY21/22. Additionally, MLC staff work with students using the computers/technology inside the center (7.64 NB) supporting language learning throughout the semester. This includes providing online/virtual tutoring support via Zoom using the computer and camera equipment in the lab, and students utilizing language learning resources via ePortfolio, Duolingo, Quizlet, and other digital Open Access Resources (OARs). This also involves online scheduling, digital management of learning resources on the MLC ePortfolio page, support via zoom and in-person, and technology troubleshooting. Currently, the MLC receives a Tech fee allocation of $25,508/yr. We are requesting an increase in this allocation of $12,000. Totaling - $37,508/yr. The additional funding will allow the MLC to provide more hours of availability to help with the increase in demand - allowing more students to complete the placement exam for increased course registration and persistence/progression with their academic careers, increase online/virtual tutoring support, and further increase engagement with language learning utilizing the digital resources outlined above.
